Daybreak’s Inpatient chemical dependency treatment
programs are certified by the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse.
They meet criteria set by the American Society of Addiction Medicine
(ASAM) as Level III medically monitored programs, and use methods deemed
by the industry to be “Best Practices” because of their
effectiveness.
Our Inpatient programs serve teens from ages 12 through
17 from throughout Washington state. We also serve many teens from across
the northwest, including Idaho, Oregon, Montana, and Alaska.
Daybreak provides a secure environment where your child
can receive the benefits of drug and alcohol treatment, school, recreation,
and an introduction to 12 step programs. A client’s length of
stay depends upon each individual situation, the severity of the problem,
and progress during treatment.

How Treatment Works at Daybreak
Our Therapeutic Approach
Daybreak operates two Inpatient programs. We have a
34 bed facility in Spokane, Washington, which houses both boys and girls
in separate halls. And we have a 16 bed boys only facility in Vancouver,
Washington.

- Provide an in-depth assessment of the needs and strengths
of the client and client family.

a healthy lifestyle.

and follow-up therapy for the client and family.

Primary Counselors
consist of chemical dependency counselors, social workers, and mental
health counselors, all of whom are cross-trained in chemical dependency
and mental health counseling.
Milieu Counselors coach behavior
skills as the clients participate in daily activities
School Teachers assess
and tutor students according to their individual academic needs. School
programs are tailored to each individual.

Treatment Milieu (environment)
Our living and treatment environment is warm and safe, yet highly structured
in order to facilitate behavioral coaching and teaching. Within the
environment, our Milieu Counselors provide feedback and coaching about
recovery issues and effective behavior.
Clients have light, daily chores, such as keeping their
rooms clean, to helping with meal clean-up.
Individual Therapy
Each client has an assigned Primary Counselor. Clients receive a minimum
of one hour of scheduled individual therapy per week. Additional counseling
sessions occur on an as-needed basis.
Family Therapy
Family participation in therapy has proven to dramatically increase
a teen’s chances of recovery . Family sessions are arranged with
the Primary Counselor. There is also a parents group held every Saturday.
Recovery Education
Each day clients receive education on issues pertinent to their recovery
and growth. Subjects include self-esteem, adolescent development, and
gender issues.
Skills training groups
Skills groups address four areas of mental health which are most problematic
for people: mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness,
and distress tolerance. The group setting is designed to provide an
accepting environment where clients learn effective strategies for coping
with situations and practice these skills using situations they have
experienced personally.
12 Step Meetings
Clients attend 12-step meetings three times each week.

Daybreak’s counselor’s are trained in two
research-based methods of therapy which are deemed to be “Best
Practices” by the mental health industry. They are Motivational
Enhancement Therapy (MET), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
Motivational Enhancement Therapy
Research shows that people are better able to make changes when the
motivation comes from within themselves. Motivation is the reason why
people do the things they do. Motivational interviewing is a counseling
approach based on the principle that all human behavior is motivated.
It acknowledges that deciding to change is difficult and most people
experience both want, and don’t want, to change. It also acknowledges
that people can perceive both the advantages and disadvantages of changing,
or continuing, with their current drug use behavior. The aim is not
to immediately focus on the action of changing, but working to enhance
motivation to change.
Dialectical Behavior therapy
DBT is an approach designed for people who have trouble controlling
their emotions and behavior. Clients are taught and helped to use skills
to help tolerate distress, manage their emotions, and be more effective
in interpersonal relationships. The skills are taught in group settings,
and are coached as the clients go through their other daily activities.
DBT blends specific styles of individual and group therapies into a
coherent approach that emphasizes patients assuming responsibility for
their own actions.
